Management Council Bios

Allan Fineblit, K.C., Chair

Allan Fineblit is a lawyer in private practice in the areas of regulation of professionals, governance, employment law, professional ethics, and dispute resolution. He has previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Law Society of Manitoba. He was designated as King’s Counsel in 1998 and is the recipient of the Manitoba Bar Association President’s Award and the Richard J. Scott Award for his work on access to legal services. He is a member of the Manitoba Blue Cross Board of Directors (and Chairs their Human Resources Committee) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba Council and Executive Committee. He also Chairs the Board of the Canadian lawyers Insurance Association.

Allan is reappointed a member of the Management Council and Chair for a period of three years effective December 17, 2022.

 

Helga Van Iderstine, K.C., Vice Chair

Helga Van Iderstine is a partner with MLT Aikins and Aikins MacAulay & Thorvaldson, where she specializes in civil litigation and administrative law, with a particular focus on regulatory issues. She has appeared in all levels of courts in Manitoba, the Supreme Court of Canada and before various regulatory boards including the Manitoba Public Utilities Board and National Energy Board. Van Iderstine was called to the Manitoba bar in 1991 and is a member of the Manitoba Law Society, the Manitoba Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Alberta and the Law Society of Saskatchewan. She currently serves as a board member to the Manitoba Theatre Centre, corporate secretary to the 2017 Canada Games, trustee to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law Endowment Fund and chair of the Canada Iceland Foundation Scholarship.

Helga is reappointed a member of the Management Council for a period of three years effective December 17, 2022. Helga was appointed as Vice-Chair on July 6, 2022.

 

Roberta Campbell, K.C.

Roberta L. Campbell is a lawyer and founding partner of Campbell Gunn Inness Seib, where she specializes in criminal law. She has a bachelor of arts with a focus on economics and a bachelor of law from the University of Manitoba. She was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1995. Campbell served as the founding member and past chair of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted, vice-president of the Manitoba Criminal Trial Lawyers Association and president of the Law Society of Manitoba.

Roberta is reappointed a member of the Management Council for a period of three years effective July 6, 2022.

 

Daljit Kainth

Daljit Kainth is a financial advisor with Coast to Coast Insurance Group and owner of Hair Technique and Spa Natural. He has two masters of science degrees, in computer science and information technology, and also holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics and marketing. Kainth previously served as the vice-president of the India Association of Manitoba, co-ordinator for the Folklorama India Pavilion and member of the Folklorama Steering Committee.

Dean Scaletta

Dean Scaletta is the director of legal services and the previous director of access, privacy and litigation for Manitoba Public Insurance. He was called to the Manitoba bar in 1982 and has a bachelor of commerce and a bachelor of law from the University of Manitoba. Scaletta has served as the national treasurer and finance committee chair for the Canadian Bar Association, chairperson to the President’s Special Committee on Trust Safety for the Law Society of Manitoba and national treasurer for the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association.

Dean is reappointed a member of the Management Council for a period of two years effective July 6, 2022.

 

Crystal Laborero

Crystal Laborero is a band member of Sapotaweyak Cree Nation and is presently the principal of Laborero Consulting where she enjoys taking on innovative projects that can positively impact community. She is the board Chairperson for Assiniboine Credit Union, past Chair for The RBC Winnipeg Convention Centre, board member for Manitoba Blue Cross, Legal Aid Manitoba and Winnipeg World Trade Centre. Crystal is the first incumbent to hold the position of Trust Manager for Peguis First Nation Surrender Claim Trust, managing the administration for a $130 Million trust. She is also the former Director, Human Resources with Tribal Wi-Chi-Way-Win Capital Corporation (TWCC) and the founding CEO of Aski Financial. Crystal has extensive experience in Indigenous human resource issues as well as community development. In a previous role, Crystal was Director of Aboriginal Relations for United Way of Winnipeg where she was charged with the responsibility to develop a first of its kind strategy that builds and enhances relationships with and for the Indigenous community.

Crystal was also pivotal in the development of the Aboriginal Employment Initiative with the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council of Manitoba. This initiative was the first of its kind in Canada as it brought together two major business groups, two levels of government and representation from a national Indigenous organization. Crystal also spent 10 years working with Royal Bank Financial Group in many capacities ranging from management to human resources where she specialized in the recruitment & retention of Indigenous employees. She was also part of the team to open the first on-reserve branch for the bank in Manitoba located at Peguis First Nation and lived in the community for 3 years.

Crystal holds a Certificate in Human Resource Management and a Certificate in Management from the University of Manitoba. In addition, Crystal attended Queen’s School of Business – Leadership Program and holds a Certificate in Practical Workshop Facilitation from the University of Winnipeg. Crystal is a recent graduate from the Directors Education Program from Rothmans Institute of Corporate Directors and holds an ICD.D designation.

Greg Johnson

Greg is appointed a member of the Management Council for a period of three years effective July 6, 2022.

 

Dr. Shiu-Yik Au

Shiu-Yik Au (Yik) is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba. Yik holds a Ph.D. in Finance from York University, an MBA from Cornell University, an MBA from Queen’s University, and a CFA charter. Prior to his academic life, he worked as a consultant and investment analyst for 12 years.

Yik is also active in the financial and local community. He sits on the Board of Directors overseeing the University of Manitoba Pension Plan, the Investment Committee of the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (TRAF), and a few non-profit organizations in the Winnipeg area.

In his personal life, Yik and his wife have a baby boy and two cats whose meows are edicts to be obeyed.

Yik is appointed a member of the Management Council for a period of three years effective January 18, 2023.
