Confidentiality

All information you provide to your lawyer is private and confidential.

Your lawyer will not share your information with anyone except the team of people in the law office who are working on your case, such as:

  • Articling students
  • Paralegals
  • Support staff

Your Permission

Your legal team cannot discuss your case or give out your personal information unless you grant them permission to do so, with one exception – they may provide information to Legal Aid Manitoba (LAM) if LAM needs information about you and your case to decide whether or not you are still eligible for legal aid. LAM is obliged to obtain this information under The Legal Aid Manitoba Act.

This applies at the beginning of your case and at any time during your case when there is a change in your situation. This information is protected by The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This Act says that LAM can use information it collects about you for its own purposes only and cannot give it to anyone else unless you give your permission. Your lawyer can explain your privacy rights to you.
